News and media - press releases: Aiming to achieve zero emissions in mining operations - Event to accelerate collaboration among GHG Alliances.

Komatsu (President: Hiroyuki Ogawa), together with members of the Komatsu GHG Alliance*1 (hereinafter referred to as the Alliance), which was established in August 2021 to accelerate the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions ("GHG") in mine operations, will share the latest information on GHG reduction at mine sites at the Arizona Proving Ground in Tucson, Arizona, USA. We held an event to strengthen cooperation. The event also included a driving demonstration of a battery truck that improved from the EVX (battery dump truck) concept vehicle exhibited by Komatsu at the 2021 MINExpo.

At this event, we discussed technological progress related to battery performance and size, the latest trends in regulations related to GHG reduction, and introduced how to utilize charging technology for battery trucks using Komatsu's trolley (wired) system. At the demonstration at the Arizona Proving Ground, a battery dump truck modified version of the EVX concept vehicle was used to demonstrate the use of a dump truck battery, power supply from the trolley system to a parked dump truck, and dynamic charging from the trolley system to a dump truck while driving uphill.

The alliance was launched by four of the world's leading mining companies and industry leaders, Rio Tinto, BHP, Cordelco and Boliden, with six new members joining the alliance with the common goal of achieving zero emissions. The first target model of this alliance is a super-large dump truck, and Komatsu is also working on the development of a "power agnostic dump truck" that can operate from any power source, such as batteries, hydrogen fuel cells, etc., in addition to existing diesel engines.

Komatsu aims to reduce CO2 emissions from product use by 50% (compared to 2010) and CO2 emissions from production by 50% (compared to 2010) by 2030 as management targets of the medium-term management plan. We will also aim for carbon neutrality by 2050 as a challenge goal.
Going forward, Komatsu will continue to accelerate its efforts in the GHG Alliance and take on the challenge of carbon neutrality by contributing to GHG reduction and realizing sustainable mining operations at an early stage.
