Careers: Learn how we develop talent

i. Apprenticeships

Komatsu’s apprenticeship program caters for the mining and construction sectors.  The apprentice program runs over 4 years and 6 months, and apprentices can qualify in the following trades: Millwright, Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Electrical and Auto Electrical.

During their apprenticeship, learners receive both theoretical and practical training, preparing them for the workplace. Apprentices also rotate between departments and sections, gaining experience on a wide range of equipment, and working with various mentors.  The hands-on training program includes Used Equipment, New Equipment, Field Service, and Reman Division.  Apprentices also attend Phase 1 and 2 training at an outside service provider.

Apprentices that qualify at Komatsu, are in demand in the mining and construction industries, and we pride ourselves on the quality of qualified artisans produced.

ii. YES Youth

Komatsu created jobs for 47 young people that were previously unemployed, thus helping to address the youth unemployment crisis in South Africa.  Through this program our YES Youth gain work experience and build their skills, making them more employable. They are placed in various roles across the business.

iii. TEC

The TEC Programme (Technical Education for Communities) is a joint venture between the Komatsu Foundation Trust, Cummins, DHET, and merSETA.  It was established to close the technical skills gap through local vocational programmes and aims to deliver industry relevant skills training to learners, enabling them to secure good jobs in their communities, thereby uplifting themselves and their community. The first TEC Programme was launched at Sedibeng TVET College, and it will be rolled out to other TVET Colleges in future.
